AT LAST the Fayetteville, Arkansas, City Council has passed an improved Hillside Ordinance.
Five years, more or less, since the previous mayor, Dan Coody, vetoed almost exactly what was passed tonight.
Aldermen Ferrell and Rhoads voted against it (has no one in Ward 3 even suffered foundation failure?), while Council-members Cook, Lewis, Lucas, Petty and Thiel voted to pass it.
Before the final vote, Mayor Lioneld Jordan explained that, as a young carpenter, he had helped shore up many house foundations on Fayetteville hillsides and had always thought that home-buyers and lot-buyers should have some protection. Jordan said that he voted for the original hillside ordinance and would vote for it tonight if the vote resulted in his being required to vote.
Mrs. Thiel stated before the vote that she believed that Council-member Adella Gray would vote for it if she had been able to attend.
I am sure that the Iconoclast will provide more background and commentary on this issue. Or maybe Lessie will dig up some of the old articles and commentary from the past to share later.
Something really good for the consumer AND for the environment happened tonight. Thanks to all who worked so many years to make this happen.
