Wikipedia had this event in their "This Day in History" column. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Molasses_Disaster)
Molasses was also used as a key ingredient in munitions at the time.
Accounts sound VERY much like the coal ash disaster in Tennessee indeed.
