Aspen Ridge needs your attention. Please share concerns.

People who use South Duncan Avenue, 11th Street and Hill Avenue between 6th Street and 15th Street, whether they live in the Town Branch Neighborhood or simply pass through the area, are invited to share comments and concerns about the Aspen Ridge Townhome project by e-mailing aubreyshepherd@hotmail.com or logging onto

and entering a comment.

Information collected will be offered to the Fayetteville City Council when that body again considers renewing the Aspen Ridge permit to resume building whenever the developers choose, as long as it begins at least a few minutes before midnight at the end of June 2008. What do they need to do and/or promise before getting approval? Post a big bond?

Cities shouldn’t pay to fix developers’ errors but demand compliance.

The city will have to step up in all such cases, not necessarily paying to correct problems created by poorly managed development or neglect but as the FINAL regulatory agency of record on such matters.

Few people experiencing the effects of mis-managed stormwater or seeing a bad plan about to be put in action bother calling the U.S. Corps of Engineers, EPA, FEMA, state soil-conservation agency (Arkansas Natural Resources Conservation http://www.anrc.arkansas.gov/ ), ADEQ (Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality), or the Game and Fish Commission (Arkansas Stream Team) or any similar agency more than once because EACH and EVERY such agency is burdened by bureaucratic limitations. The standard reply to complainants is “Your city (or county) can make stronger rules. We can enforce only a certain few aspects of the overall picture.”
Fayetteville and other Northwest Arkansas jurisdictions must adopt all those agencies’ ideas and suggestions and REGULATIONS and hire people to enforce them. Only then can we brag about leading the effort to create a sustainable community.
