What a difference a month makes! Last month I was so excited about all the rain we were receiving and how the frogs were croaking and once again we are back to drought conditions. Hopefully we will now have a run of cooler weather with some rain to go along with it. Isn’t it funny how weather works? Colorado is having so much rain and flooding.
Makes you wonder why it can’t be evenly distributed all over the world all the time.

Gardens have been selected for our 2014 garden tour. Gail and I are putting the final touches on next year’s programs and the Nominating Committee will be presenting our 2014 slate of officers so things are progressing with the organization.
This Saturday’s program should be really interesting. History and gardening are my two favorite topics and I know Susan will do a good job of incorporating them. If you have any plants you would like to donate to our monthly raffle please do bring them. See you Saturday.

Speaker Notes
Susan Young is the outreach coordinator at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale, a position she has held since 1994. Susan is a lifelong resident of Fayetteville, and a fifth-generation Ozarker. She has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Arkansas.
Susan is the author of So Big, This Little Place: The Founding of Tontitown, Arkansas, 1898-1917 and editor of Memories I Can’t Let Go Of: Life Stories from Tontitown, Arkansas.
Susan’s Ozark history interests include traditional folkways, religion, and cemeteries.
In her spare time, Susan enjoys reading, traveling, gardening, genealogy, and birding. She has been a proud member of the Washington County Master Gardeners organization since 2007.

In Memoriam
It is with sadness we report the death of Tom Larkin on Monday, September 9th. Tom had spoken to FGNS before and there are several members of FGNS who are also members of the Orchid Society of the Ozarks of which Tom was a founding member. Tom was an American Orchid Society judge and for a while ran a business “Whippoorwill Orchids.” Many people in the area have a Whippoorwill orchid in their home. It is the time of the jelly. If you saw someone who looked like Steve and Cathy beside the north bound 540 on-ramp at exit 78....well it was Steve and Cathy harvesting the native plum to make a delicious plum jelly. I love this jelly so much that even when I was ten or so my brothers and I would go out and pick enough plums for mom to make jelly. I hope you are preserving the summer harvest also.

City Council tables issue of extreme importance to allow four weeks more for public comment

City council just tabled issue of whether to film and broadcast meetings of the council's nominating committee for boards and commissions. The argument is simple. Going back to the INTENT of the journalists who fought decades ago to get a freedom of information act in Arkansas, NO TWO COUNCIL Members should ever discuss an item of business privately. Four members of the council (one from each fayetteville ward) should ever discuss or make a decision on who to appoint in private. And it the responsibility of the govt. channel to make sure that no one in city government violates that goal.
