Olivia Ann Horn of Fayetteville was born in Black Rock, Ark., to C.L. Horn and Donna Wallin in 1939, the youngest of nine children. Lib (as she preferred to be called) was graduated from Black Rock High School and Arkansas State University. She died after a brief illness on Nov. 10, 2015.
Lib had taught English, worked for the Veteran's Administration, and as a Veterinarian Technician prior to moving to Fayetteville in the 1980's and becoming the Director of the Fayetteville Animal Shelter.
Here she discovered her true calling: protector of and advocate for the unwanted, mistreated, tortured animals of the world. She was the driving force behind the building of a state of art animal shelter in Fayetteville, and later, the creation and building of the Lester C. Howick Animal Shelter of Washington County. Lib initiated the development of low cost spay/neuter programs within both shelters. Known locally, statewide, and nationally for her efforts to improve the lives of all animals, she will be remembered for her compassion for both animals and people.
Lib leaves behind two brothers, John D. Horn of California and Ray D. Horn of Kansas, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless loving friends, family, and pets. She will be missed by all.
A service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, Monday, November 16 at 3 p.m. Pets, of course, are welcome. Memorials may be made to the Lester Howick Animal Shelter of Washington County.

Larry V. Horn of Fayetteville was born in Black Rock, Ark., to C.L. and Donna Horn in 1935. He died at home Sept. 18, 2015, after a brief illness. Larry was graduated from Black Rock High School, Harding University, and the University of Arkansas, culminating in a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 1977. Known by his students as an inspiring and favorite teacher, he taught at colleges and Universities in Florida, Illinois, and Arkansas.
During his retirement, he focused on his intense interest in the history of his family, researching the genealogy for several years. He was able to present it to members of his family in book form.
Larry was known for his wide variety of friends, and his love of animals. He was a very early volunteer as an investigator for animal abuse before such a program even existed. He also served as board member for the Humane Society of the Ozarks. And, of course, he was never without a good number of cats and dogs at home, most of them rescues.
At Larry's request, there will be no service, and his ashes will be taken to the family plot in the Powhatan Cemetery in Lawrence County. Memorials may be made to the Lester Howick Animal Shelter of Washington County.

Larry was someone I saw seldom, but whenever we met, it was as if we had seen each other only the week before. His conversation reflected his deep and wide knowledge of literature and his sharp sense of humor. It was always fun to swap memories with him of the English Department at the U of A.

I am saddened to hear of the loss of Larry Horn. We only communicated through email researching our common ancestry but it is a relationship I will miss all the same. My heart is heavy today with the news. My condolences to his family, cousins and relatives I have never met but hope to someday.
