Citizens were shown two proposed options for restoring the stream bank
through Red Oak Park located at 4600 West New Bridge Road at a Public
Meeting held November 19, 2009. The item was also discussed at the
November 30, 2009, Ward 4 meeting.
The City of Fayetteville collected 23 comments from the public on the
two options presented at these meetings. Ten citizens preferred Option 1
which included channel restoration through the majority of the park;
three citizens preferred Option 2 with minimal improvements other than
check dams and a control structure at New Bridge Road; and ten citizens
preferred “other” options.
City Engineering and Parks staff have evaluated an alternative that
would provide and preserve park area on the north side of New Bridge
Road by utilizing piping in this area of the channel (approx. 300 feet
in length). This would preserve the existing basketball court and
provide an area where a new pavilion with ADA accessibility could be
constructed.
The control structure and check dams that were previously proposed in
Option 2 would still be proposed on the south side of New Bridge Road.
The goals achieved by this alternative would provide park area on the
north side of the park and provide slowing, infiltration and recharge of
storm water in the park area south of New Bridge Road.
A drawing of the proposed combined option is attached. A presentation
will be given to the City Council at the January 12, 2010, council
agenda session. The meeting will be held at City Hall located at 113
West Mountain Street in Room 326 at 4:30 PM. City staff are working to
place this information on www.accessfayetteville.org as soon as
possible. For more information call Fayetteville Parks and Recreation

Beaver Lake and Hobbes area to be site of birding activities on January 16, 2010
Joe Neal reports:
Since we have now moved into 2010, this is a reminder that the first Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society field trip is Saturday, January 16. We are meeting at Hobbs State Park - Conservation Area, 20201 E. Highway 12, Rogers at 9 AM. We will pack into as few cars as possible and drive the 5 miles down to Rocky Branch on Beaver Lake to view winter waterfowl and hopefully find land birds in the cedar and shortleaf pine stands adjacent. The productivity of mid-winter waterfowl trips to Beaver varies immensely -- from a waste of time & gas to rarities like Pacific Loon or Western Grebe. We will be hoping for a day with little or no wind, or if slight wind, from the south. Dress warmly -- but we will never be far from cars. (Note: no bathrooms are open at Rocky Branch now). After Rocky Branch we will return to Hobbes State Park & can bird some more there for anyone interested and picnic. At 2 PM, I'm presenting a program on winter birds in the Hobbes-Beaver Lake Area as part of the
park's lecture series. I am told there will be snacks (not lunch) provided at the park as part of this activity. The field trip & lecture are free & open to the public. You do not need to be a member of NWAAS or be an experienced birder to participate in this or any other field trip. If you have additional questions, call me at 479-521-1858.

Absurd places get deluxe extra-tall curbs; this spot is one where the water previously could run onto rich, dark prairie soil and be absorbed
Please click on images to ENLARGE view of the area of Government Avenue and Greg Avenue, where they meet Prairie Street. Water now will be routed directly though pipe to the Tanglewood Branch of the Spout Branch of the Town Branch of the West Fork of the White River. On the way,the increased speed and amount of water will erode more of the riparian soil and more frequently flood adjacent property. When do we get a riparian ordinance and a low-impact development ordinance dthat will apply to Fayetteville's street department?
